About Us – Mel's Maids

In September 2019, I embarked on an accountancy course at UWTSD, driven by my knack for math and a desire to figure out where I truly belonged. But as the course began, something didn’t click. While I enjoyed the numbers, I quickly realised it wasn’t the path for me. It was during this time that I met a group of engineering students whose passion for their field was infectious. Their discussions around critical thinking, problem-solving, and design intrigued me—it wasn’t just math, but so much more.
 

Initially, I was drawn to Energy and Environmental Engineering, but I hesitated. My grades weren’t perfect, and I doubted I’d fit in. Society had ingrained in me that engineering wasn’t a space for women. Yet, when I shared my interest at university, I was encouraged to try the foundation year for Energy and Environmental Engineering. It felt like a door opening, so I took a leap of faith.
 

Attending those first few lectures was a revelation. The course had everything I loved—math, CAD, materials research—and I thrived. Within a month, my lecturers recognised my potential and fast-tracked me to Year 1, bypassing the foundation year entirely. This experience taught me that barriers, whether academic or societal, could be broken with determination and the right support.
 

As I delved deeper into the course, I found my true passion: sustainability. The environment had always been close to my heart, and the more I learned, the more I realised how much I wanted to contribute to a better world. This passion led me to two internships at Tallarna where I worked on projects in the retrofit sector. They gave me the freedom to research topics I loved, solidifying my commitment to sustainability and the Paris Agreement’s goals.
 

But my story doesn’t stop there. The inspiration for Mel's Maids came from my mother. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked as a carer in the UK, a role that deeply affected her mental health. Before that, back in Poland, she had worked as a cleaner. I wanted to create an opportunity for her—and others like her—to earn well, be respected, and thrive. That’s when the idea of starting a cleaning business took root.
 

Since 2021, I’ve been building Mel’s Maids, incorporating sustainable practices every step of the way. My mom has been my guide, sharing her expertise in cleaning techniques while I explored eco-friendly products and practices. Today, Mel’s Maids is more than just a cleaning business—it’s a mission to promote net-zero living. With partnerships in tree-planting initiatives, we help offset our customers’ carbon footprints, making it easier than ever to make a difference.
 

Looking ahead, I’m proud to expand Mel’s Maids into areas like Ammanford, Bridgend, Barry, and Llanelli, continuing our journey toward sustainability. What started as a simple idea has become a movement—a way to make every clean count, for our homes and our planet.

This is my story, and it’s only just beginning.
